Health Insurance for the Entrepreneur
Lets face it, you cannot take the chance of not having health insurance these days and this is especially true if you have a family. Okay, easy enough said but what happens if you are suddenly fired or perhaps you want to retire early before good old Medicare kicks in or you want to become an entrepreneur and do your own thing? If you are fired perhaps you think COBRA will cover you and you can continue the plan you had with your employer after a parting of the ways? Check the rates, they are usually astronomical because your loyal company no longer kicks in their share. Same with the early retirement! Check the fine print on the insurance paperwork very carefully. I am not trying to sell you anything, just passing along some useful (hopefully) info that I discovered after retiring early and finding that the company matching health plan I had been contributing too for years would only ante up the company share if I went with their plan. The answer to finding economical, quality health insurance on your own is by checking with the Chambers of Commerce around your area. They use group buying power (much like the big companies do) and are able to offer very affordable and very good health plans for you and your family. Be sure to check as many as you can as they do vary quite a bit in pricing. No, you don't have to live in the town where the Chamber is located. They'll just be happy to welcome you as a new member. The yearly dues are usually a pittance compared to the benefits you will receive. What, you have no business and don't think you can join? Become a web developer, Ebayer or dog walker for that matter. They normally don't care and your social security number is normally all you need to register with the State and collect taxes. Is it worth it? Make some phone calls and I think you will become very pleasantly surprised. |
